Phoebe Rothfeld

I am an artist who works across a wide range of mediums and is greatly interested in the collision of hand-crafted and digital realms. Animation, theatre, and illustrated book formats as means of storytelling are closest to my heart. I graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz in 2014 with a Bachelor's Degree in Art and minor in Theatre Arts and am currently pursuing my MFA in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

My website contains much variance in medium and I want to directly address this with two different statements.

Firstly, for me, the process of creating itself ultimately transcends any one work-medium. With every new project I fall in love with the intricacies and quirks of the format, which in turn informs the next project in ways that wouldn’t have been possible had I continually worked in the same exact vein.

Secondly, I have realized that beyond anything else, the things that simultaneously haunt and entrance me completely, at my most intimate level, are stories.

Regardless of medium, the art pieces and projects I embark on all come from the same desperate desire to inspire imagination and empathy.

I am in love with the fantastical and thrive on stories.

I am attempting to bridge the gap between people, while at the same time, acknowledging that our perspectives are vast and infinite. This vastness is a cause for celebration.

I want to create a sense of openness for any and all walks of life. Fantasy is one of the most amazing ways one can do this for when experiencing a different reality, impossibilities literally cease to weigh one down for they do not exist.

For me, a fantastical means of expression is truer than the literal.

We are beautiful in both our connectedness and individuality, and through my work is the most honest way I can express this.
